Hi!
I write children’s fiction, adult fiction, essays, and poetry. I focus on Christian discipleship with close attention to place: the way we are shaped by the ground, created world, built environment, history, communities, and ideas we inhabit. My work touches on the practice of pilgrimage, culture, race, class, politics, children and family, the arts, the Church, Christian unity, Bible and theology, and Creation care. You can find a list of published pieces here, and sign up for more regular writing on my Substack.
I grew up in Voluntown, a small town in CT, and currently live in Durham, NC with my family. I hold degrees in English Literature, Music, and Religion from University of Richmond and Divinity from Duke University Divinity School. Currently, I serve as Executive Director of DurhamCares and Associate Minister at Mt. Level Missionary Baptist Church. My work in Durham focuses on holistic discipleship: equipping people and communities to embody the gospel in every aspect of life. Since 2016, I’ve led the design and implementation of the Durham Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope, a program that has facilitated more than 70 local pilgrimages and taken over 1,000 people on a journey of discovering how Durham’s story, their stories, and God’s story are woven together. I’ve worked with hundreds of churches in Durham, facilitating spaces for collaboration, and equipping them to listen to their communities and care for their neighbors. I’ve been involved in advocacy efforts for racial justice, housing justice, police reform, preservation of Black communities, public history and narrative justice, and protections for the unhoused community.
Groups have asked me to speak, teach, preach, and lead workshops and retreats on the practice of pilgrimage, nonprofit leadership and development, strategic planning, racial equity, and public history. If you’re interested in having me join your group or event, fill out the form on the contact page. Thanks for stopping by!
